Their final day title collapse has been described as the worst performance in the club’s history, and now Kaizer Chiefs have this morning summoned both its head coach Ernst Middendorp and all the players to their base.
The Glamour Boys came into the final day of the season needing just a win against Baroka FC in order to end their five-year title drought, but all that came crushing down after they could only manage a draw, while rivals Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed Black Leopards 3-0 to topple Chiefs and claim their third successive league honours.
In what was meant to end in a celebratory 50th anniversary for the club, having led the league standings for 379 days, this dream came to a dissappointing end in just under 20 minutes.
Although Middendorp has a year remaining on his contract at Naturena, the German tactician has come under immense pressure for helding a divided camp over favouritism of certain players who performed below-par and yet still found themselves in the matchday squad.
It is now expected that he will no longer stay in the Chiefs hot seat, with Gavin Hunt the front runner to take over ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.
