The 35-year-old joins on a free transfer from Champions League finalists Paris St-Germain after their final defeat to Bayern Munich on August 23. The ex-Parisian has been brought in to bolster Frank Lampard’s team’s defence, which conceded the most goals – 54 in total – in the Premier League top 10 in 2019/20.

Speaking following his signing, the Brazilian said: “I am so happy to be joining Chelsea. I am delighted to be a part of Frank Lampard’s exciting squad.” Silva added, “I’m here to challenge for honours and I look forward to playing at Stamford Bridge very soon.”

With an impressive run of 88 international appearances, Silva played more than 200 games for PSG during his eight years in the French capital. He won seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles in this run. The defender is manager Lampard’s fifth major summer signing, following former Nice defender Malang Sarr, England left-back Ben Chilwell from Leicester and forwards Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.
