Torres, City’s first signing of the summer transfer window, put pen to paper on the contract for a reported initial fee of £20.9M (R474 million). The 20-year-old Spaniard, quoted on the English club’s official website, said he looked forward to every bit of the new challenge ahead.

“I am so happy to be joining City. Every player wants to be involved in attacking teams and Manchester City are one of the most attacking in world football,” said Torres. “Pep encourages a really open [and] aggressive style, which I love, and he is a manager with a proven track record of improving players. To have him overseeing my development is a dream.”

Guardiola, the new arrival’s Spanish compatriot, has his eye firmly fixed on strengthening his squad to challenge Liverpool next season, following the loss of their Premier League title to The Reds without as much as putting up a stiff challenge on this side of the recently-concluded campaign. Man City director of football, Txiki Begiristain, spoke volumes of Torres’ recruitment.

“We have followed Ferran’s progress closely and have been very impressed,” said Begiristain. “He is young and still developing, but his technical qualities are exactly what we are looking for in a winger. He is quick, direct, can create space with one movement and is capable of producing match-winning moments.”

Torres made 44 appearances for Valencia last season, during which time he found the back of the net six times. Chief to his prowess, and something of a huge recruitment buying point for City ahead of the 20-year-old’s eventual signing, is his ability to play on either wing and operate through the middle with pace, and an ability to beat players. City will start their challenge of the 2020/2021 Premier League season on September 12 with a fixture list yet to be confirmed.
