A BLIGHT in Arsenal’s FA Cup celebrations after their 2-1 win over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on Saturday came courtesy of their captain and match hero, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who endured an embarrassing moment trying to lift the prized trophy.
The Gabon international, who is rumoured to be on the brink of leaving Arsenal, scored a brace to help The Gunners to a record 14th FA Cup title. Before the match, Manchester United – the competitions second most successful team – trailed the London side by a single trophy but are now two behind after featuring in 20 finals to The Gunners’ 21.
The best or most embarrassing moment after full time came when Aubameyang had to lift the trophy himself, rather than it be handed to him, due to heightened Covid-19 measures. When the moment to hoist the trophy came for the forward, first, he could not get it off the plinth but after managing to lift it with a semblance of grip, it fell through his hands and rested on the grassy pitch.

His second attempt was cleaner, however, and Arsenal broke out in loud excitement. The win secured Arteta’s first piece of silverware as a manager, after taking the helm at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season; vacating as Pep Guardiola’s second in charge at Manchester City. In the recently-concluded Premier League season, the Spaniard only just made the Europa League qualifiers with an eighth-place finish on the table.
Commenting on his captain’s initial blunder with the trophy – his first since the DFB Pokal Cup with Borussia Dortmund in 2017 – the manager said: “It can happen. I think it happened a few years back as well. He needs more experience with trophies. You know we can get him used to that!”
