SA players abroad wrap

It was a weekend of mixed results for South Africans abroad, with some leagues now concluded while others are getting into rhythm.

Ayabulela Konqobe & Darren Smith – Finnish Second Division

The South African duo picked up from where they left off last week, as they guided second-placed Ekenas IF to a convincing 2-0 victory over Kaajani.

Konqobe netted his fifth goal in five matches and is now the league’s top goalscorer, followed by fellow compatriot Smith who sits on four strikes.

Lebogang Mothiba – French Ligue 1

The towering Bafana Bafana striker scored the only goal of the match, a penalty, for RC Strasbourg in their 1-0 win over Nimes in a friendly as they gear up for the 2020/21 campaign.

Tumi Moshobane – USL Championship

The Soweto-born left-footed attacker netted his first goal of the campaign for San Diego Loyal who ran out narrow 2-1 victors over Las Vegas Lights.

San Diego now sit top of the league standings in Group B after five matches.

Linda Motlhalo – Danish Damallsvenskan

‘Problem Child’ started the match and lasted 72 minutes for Djurgardens who played to a pulsating 3-3 draw against Kristianstad.

Tashreeq Matthews & Luke Le Roux – Swedish Allsvenskan

The South African youth internationals lasted 80 minutes as Matthews netted his first goal for Varberg BoIS in their 3-3 draw against Elfsborg.

Gift Links – Danish Superliga

The former Cape Town City winger was a 59th minute introduction for AGF Aarhus in their final match of the campaign who narrowly lost 1-0 to giants Brondby IF.

Despite the setback, Aarhus finished third to claim the bronze medal, and will now contest in the UEFA Europa League playoffs.

Bantu Mzwakali – Swedish Second Division

The former Ajax Cape Town winger came on in the 72nd minute for IK Brage who were beaten 2-1 by J-Sodra.

Thibang Phete – Portuguese Primeira Liga

‘Cafu’ played the entire match for SAD Belenenses who fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Vitoria Setubal, to finish 15th in the 18-team league.

Luther Singh – Portuguese Primeira Liga

Singh started the match but could do little to help Moreirense who fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Tondela, to finish the league in eighth place.
