The reigning PSL champions have been after Modiba for over two years now, and even entered into negotiations in January this year, but failed to meet SuperSport’s R20 million price tag slapped on the player, with talks eventually breaking down.

Sundowns’ interest in the 24-year-old left-footed player seems to have been rekindled, with Matthews now open to letting the player join the Brazilians.

“We’ve been in talks with Mamelodi Sundowns. They called us to see if we are open to an offer for Aubrey,” Matthews exclusively told Independent Media.

“I did indicate that we will be open to an offer, as long as it will be a substantially improved offer from what they gave us (in the previous window).

“They have stated that they are prepared to make an attractive offer for him.”

The Matsatsantsa CEO also added that he rejected the offer of Sundowns giving them players in order to soften the Modiba deal.

“They have offered me a couple of players as part of the deal, and I went back to them and said ‘no’ to those players. It is going to be a pure cash deal,” Matthews added.

With uncertainty still ongoing regarding the resumption of the PSL, Matthews confirmed that the deal will be pushed based on football outcomes.

“Until we know if we will play or not, we haven’t pushed the deal.

“For example, if the league is called off, I’ll push the deal quickly. If I still have six games left and I’m chasing fourth spot, I don’t want to start negotiations around Aubrey Modiba. We are just sitting in limbo at the moment.

“If you ask me if there’s a realistic chance that Aubrey joins Sundowns next season, I’ll have to say yes,” Matthews said.

Pitso Mosimane’s charges have been the busiest team during the current transfer period, with close to eight players already said to have concluded deals with the Chloorkop outfit.
