THE talismanic Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has been ranked as the world’s best winger, which comes as no surprise, as the six-time Ballon d’Or winner edged ahead of Paris Saint-Germain duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
While he failed to lead his side to La Liga glory in the recently-concluded season, the Argentine amassed a total of 25 goals to earn himself the seventh Pichichi Trophy of his illustrious career at Camp Nou. Combined with his tally of strikes, the 33-year-old also cut it as the best for most chances created (21), as he went on to set a new record for most assists in a season.
He is the first player to reach 20 assists in La Liga since former teammate Xavi in 2008/09 – with no other player combining that feat with 20 or more strikes, to date. It will likely be even longer before anyone overtakes him at the top of the pile, as the rumoured to be exiting Barca La Liga record goalscorer, continues his charge of world football domination.
