SOME already have their predictions ready ahead of the resumption of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League which takes place as of August.
The competition was in March postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and has since been scheduled to take place from August 7 and 8 with the last-16 second legs kicking off, before the competition moves into fifth gear with the staging of the quarter-finals and semi-finals on August 12 to 15 and 18 to 19, respectively. The final takes place on August 23.
Ahead of the grand spectacle, Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has drummed up his own predictions for how things will pan out come the final. Competition winners last season, Robertson’s Liverpool were dumped out by Atletico Madrid in the round-of-16 to relinquish the title and all hopes of winning Europe’s biggest club cup competition back to back.
As an integral player of the newly-crowned Premier League champions, Robertson said the crown is there for any of the teams who still remain to take it, although he sidelined Atletico. The Reds lost 4-2 on aggregate to the Spanish outfit following a scintillating four goals scored in extra-time with Alvaro Morata securing Atletico’s qualification to the quarter-finals after slotting home in stoppage time of extra-time.
“Behind closed doors and being at neutral venues, I think it opens it up … Before lockdown, Bayern looked excellent against Chelsea; Real Madrid are always there, or thereabouts, but they’ve got to overturn Manchester City, which is never easy. I think Man City could be there and Juventus,” Robertson told The Lockdown Tactics.
Behind closed doors at a neutral venue I honestly think any of them could win it. We played against Atletico and they defend for their lives…If they get a lead I fancy them to keep it. If I had to put my neck on the line though I’d go Bayern Munich.”
Bayern Munich are currently still in their tie against Chelsea in the round-of-16, albeit going into the second-leg with a 3-0 aggregate. If they finish the job against Chelsea, then the German giants will play either Lyon or Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
