OLE Gunnar Solskjær’s side romped to a unique record in the Premier League following their 3-0 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Thursday night.

The game was, however, not free of controversy as many in some quarters believe the decision by the referee to award United a penalty in the 27th minute, a decision subsequently upheld by everybody’s favourite thing to hate – VAR – was incorrect after midfielder Bruno Fernandes was adjudged to have been fouled by Villa fullback Ezri Konsa.

On closer inspection, it seemed no one agreed that it should have been a penalty, something which is immaterial now as Fernandes continued his incredible run of goalscoring form by slotting home. The successful spot-kick proved to be United’s 13th in the league this season, with no other team ever having been awarded that many penalties in a Premier League campaign before.

In the process, the Red Devils kept their run of 17 successive games without losing intact as their Champions League contention hopes next season were fueled further. After being helped by a penalty at the weekend against Bournemouth, and once more against Villa, it looks like lady luck is truly favouring United going into the home straight.

The Villians now have every chance of dropping out of the top-flight; languishing in 19th place, six points above Norwich City and one behind Bournemouth, who occupy 18th place.
