Ronaldo named ‘most selfish footballer ever’, ripped apart on Twitter!

Cristiano Ronaldo has not salvaged any pride after yet another questionable showing in his second outing since Juventus returned to competitive action. The forward received criticism after he didn’t step up to take a penalty in the Coppa Italia final shoot-out defeat to Napoli at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night.

Despite seeing a spot-kick saved in the semi-final against AC Milan a few days prior, Ronaldo still ranks comfortably as Juventus’ best penalty-taker, and is generally unfazed to pressure in the big moments. But in the case of last night, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner did not even get to take one.

Both Paulo Dybala and Danilo missed from 12 yards while Napoli slotted in all four of their chances through Lorenzo Insigne, Matteo Politano, Nikola Maksimovic and Arkadiusz Milik – the latter putting away the winner to secure Gennaro Gattuso’s first trophy.

Many believe Ronaldo didn’t take a penalty because he wanted to be fifth on the list and ultimately the hero, not something which has not happened before, and something which perhaps did not raise any eyebrows on the night.

Juventus had won the Coppa Italia four years in a row prior to Ronaldo’s arrival, while he has now lost two consecutive finals of a domestic club competition for the first time in his career. Napoli’s win against former boss Maurizio Sarri brought in a first trophy in six seasons.
