Ex-Liverpool man to come out of retirement aged 38?

A former Liverpool striker has hinted at his desire to come out of retirement so he can achieve an elusive goalscoring mark. Djibril Cissé turned out for Auxerre, Marseille and Bastia in the French top-tier en route to bagging a combined 96 goals. As if that was not enough, the Frenchman is hell-bent to reach a century of goals in Ligue One as a final swansong.

Cissé, who has retired from football on two previous occasions, believes he has unfinished business, even at what is considered to be a ripe age in footballing terms. “I’m a goal scorer and I’m a man of numbers. I love to score goals and I’m on 96 goals in the French league,” he told Sky Sports, alluding that he is even willing to play for free as long as he reached the big 100.

I need four more goals and I need to do it before I die. It’s something that I keep thinking about. People say: ‘Djib, you had a good career and you won a lot of titles’. But for me, something is missing and it’s annoying. I think now is the right time to try and do it,” Cissé added.

The now 38-year-old turned out for The Reds between 2004 to 2007, during which time he made 49 appearances and scored 13 goals. His most recent clubs are third division Swiss side Yverdon and A.C. Vicenza 1902 of Italy’s Serie D. Eyeing another return to the pitch, Cissé appreciates he won’t be a regular starter should his desire be realised.

“Yes, it’s come to that point,” the veteran noted. “It’s not [even] a matter of earning money, instead, it’s a personal dream and it’s something I have to do to be 100 per cent satisfied with my football career. I have not had any offers yet but I think that’s normal. The teams are focused more on their main players.” His three-season stint at Merseyside yielded him Champions League and FA Cup winners’ medals.
