In-form Orlando Pirates talisman Gabadinho Mhango could be lost to South African shores with reported strong interest from French Ligue 1.
The diminutive speedster has been in red-hot form for the Buccaneers this term, scoring 14 league goals in 21 outings, which sees him atop of the Absa Premiership goalscorers’ chart.
Mhango, 27, has been a mainstay for Pirates following the arrival of German tactician Josef Zinnbauer, and it seems as though the Malawian international’s impressive showing has already caught the attention of French Ligue 1 outfit Stade de Reims.
Initially, the club is said to have been after the services of striker Justin Shonga, but it is now thought that his lack of game-time at the Buccaneers has seen the French outfit switching their focus to Mhango.
“While trying to follow Shonga’s progress, they were alerted to (Gabadinho) Mhango’s prowess this season and they look to have developed some interest, ” a source revealed according to Phakaaathi.
“They haven’t made any official contact with either Pirates or his manager yet, but maybe now that their league was cancelled they can focus on that.
“[Marshal] Munetsi did well there and opened the way for others now, ” added the source.
The Zimbabwean international joined Reims at the beginning of the 2019/20 term, and had a dream debut at the club helping them to qualifying for the Europa League for next season, and was this week rewarded with a new contract that will run until 2024.
With Mhango’s current market value standing at €600,000 (close to R12 million), and with his current contract only running out in June 2022, the French outfit will have to splash the cash to get him out of his running contract.
