Former SA U20 captain on why he didn’t sign for Chiefs

Even though he spent a few days training with Absa Premiership log leaders Kaizer Chiefs, former Amajita captain Ayabulela Konqobe has cleared the air on why he did not eventually sign with Amakhosi.

The 24-year-old talented centre-back was close to signing on the dotted line for the Glamour Boys during Italian mentor Giovanni Solinas’ tenure in 2018, revealing that he ran out of patience as the club took longer to get back to him.

“I was training with them [Chiefs] but they were taking too long to prepare my contract,” Konqobe was quoted as saying by KickOff.com.

“I then ended up going to Highlands Park too, and they also did the same. Then AmaZulu were quick to put something on the table.”

The former Ajax Cape Town man has however not ruled out out a move to Naturena in future.

“Hahaha, I’d probably go retire there, but not now!” he added.

Konqobe currently plies his trade in Finland for Ekenas IF, where he has already made an impressive start, playing five matches, scoring once and providing a single assist.
