The pandemic saw European football and other major leagues including the Premier League, LaLiga and Serie A, suspended several weeks ago. Given this scenario, there was no possibility of Uefa’s cup competitions reaching their scheduled climax as at the end of May.

It is, however, still hoped that the respective finals will be played on June 24 27. This may potentially be after mini-tournaments have been staged in the now-identified territories of Istanbul (Turkey) and Gdańsk (Poland). The Women’s Champions League final, originally scheduled for May 24, has also been postponed.

While no guarantee exists of these matches taking place, Uefa has undertaken to work out a formula that may allow the competitions to reach a conclusion. Uefa, according to reports, may find it difficult to rule out the second legs of ties that have already started, they may be willing to let the ones that have no.

Quarter-finals and semi-finals could also be played over a single game. It has already been agreed that European club matches could be played on a weekend and it is also understood there is no longer any imperative for the Champions League to be the last club game of the season, according to a report appearing on the BBC Sport website.
