Liverpool won’t be crowned champions! – Uefa

Uefa have released a statement stating that teams who are currently leading their championships wouldn’t be named as champions if seasons were cancelled due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

This is according to Uefa president, Aleksander Ceferin, who convening over a Uefa meeting on Tuesday, declared what for many Liverpool fans in England, is devastating news. The pandemic has ravaged European football, with Premier League bosses assessing possible ways to complete the season during an emergency board meeting on Thursday, with the suspension placed on the league extended from April 4 to April 30.

Euro 2020 was delayed to summer 2021 with the European football governing body also deciding that the club season across Europe must finish by June 30, leaving the possibility that leagues could be cancelled if they can’t be finished at this time.

I’ve seen and heard fake news that [suggests] Uefa will advise leagues to cancel their championships immediately and give the titles to those team that are leading the standings. I can say that it’s not true. Our goal is to finish the leagues and we didn’t recommend anything like that to any association or league.

For Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool, it would be ideal to finish the season for the club to earn the final six points they need to win their first title in 30 years. But it would likely be seen as unfair to just hand them the title without this happening. Handing the Reds the league would also suggest that the rest of the current positions in the league would have to stand.

This would translate to some teams not getting the chance to get out of the relegation zone or into European places. The Reds lead the Premier League by 25 points though champions Manchester City have a game in hand. How things will play out in the next few weeks or months will until matters are decided in one way or another, remain a subject of fervent speculation.
