Report: Liverpool continue incredible winning run with Spurs win

Premier League leaders Liverpool stretched their unbeaten run in the league to 38 games following a narrow 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London on Saturday night.

Spurs were looking to bounce back from their 1-0 loss to Southampton, a game which saw captain Harry Kane ruled out of competitive action until April after the Englang international limped off.

For Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese mentor was relishing the challenge of upsetting Jurgen Klopp’s men unbeaten record of 37 Premier League matches with Mourinho’s last meeting with the Reds coming up when he was still in charge of Manchester United which saw them lose 3-1 in December 2018, which followed with his sacking.

Klopp on the other hand fielded his regular strong side, making a host of changes from the side that edged Everton in the Merseyside Derby FA Cup outing.

First half:

The match got off to a high tempo as both sides looked to break the deadlock earlier with both sets of defence standing firm.

It was however the visitors who took the lead through Roberto Firmino’s opener on 37 minutes, following a clever spin from the frontman inside the box after being teed up by Mohamed Salah.

Despite trailing, the Lily Whites continued to frustrate their opponents in order to hit them back on the counter, but their chances were not to fierce enough as the sides headed into interval with Klopp’s having the 1-0 advantage.

Second half:

The Reds continued with a high-pressing game and were almost two goals to the good but Gazzaniga was outstretched to produce a one-hand superb save to deny newly-crowned African Player of the Year Sadio Mane at the far post.

Heung-Min Son failed to bring Mourinho’s charges back on level terms after finding himself in acres of space at the back post but the South Korean blazed his shot over.

Frustration piled up for the hosts and they again failed to capitalize on their chances, this time with Le Celso failing to beat Alisson Becker with the easiest of chances.

Klopp’s side opened a 16-point gap at the top over second-placed Leicester City who lost 2-1 at home to Southampton earlier on in the day.
