Makhura pays respect to Richard Maponya

Political parties and politicians have joined the rest of the South Africans in mourning the late businessman Richard Maponya.

Maponya passed away on Monday at the age of 99 after a long battle with illness.

Maponya, who founded the Maponya mall in Soweto, has been hailed as a black business icon.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura says Maponya was an inspiration to many business owners.

” We are saddened by the news of the passing on of struggle veteran and black business icon, Dr. Richard Maponya,” Makhura said.

” He was the epitome of black business excellence and resilience, as well as a great inspiration to a generation of young black entrepreneurs. May his legacy live forever.”

Maponya, who recently turned 99, was also commended by the Democratic Alliance.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit the Maponya house to pay his respect to the billionaire.

Maponya is expected to be buried this weekend.
