Teen star Jones was the man of the moment, with a magnificent curling 25-yard scorcher that eluded England and Toffees keeper Jordan Pickford’s arms as it sailed into the top right corner with under 20 minutes to go.

It was a frustrating evening for the visitors who had numerous chances in the match but could not take them, much to the frustration of manager Ancelotti.

Everton’s attacking prowess somehow faded in the second period, as they failed to register a single shot on target.

The former Chelsea boss was hoping to lead his charges to their first victory at Anfield since 1999, but it was the home side that stood firm to embarrass the much more experienced Everton outfit.

There was a start for January signing Takumi Minamino who put in a great shift upfront, though he was hauled off in the second half.

Then came the moment of madness when the 18-year-old Jones received the ball from Divock Origi just outside the Everton box before rattling it past Pickford.

The fourth-round draw takes place on Monday night, with Liverpool waiting to see who their next opponent is.
