The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called the announcement of the presidential pardon by President Cyril Ramaphosa politically influenced.
Ramaphosa announced that he will be pardoning 14 000 of criminal offenders.
Political activist Kanya Cekeshe and AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo are among offenders who will benefit from Ramaphosa’s pardon.
However, DA member of Parliament Glynnis Breytenbach is against Ramaphosa’s gesture to the offenders.
” This announcement by the President will result in an excess of 14 000 criminals being released in order to provide “cover” for the release of these two and other politically expedient “pardons”, Breytenbach said.
” The slap in the face that this reckless, foolhardy approach represents to the literally thousands of South Africans who fall victim to crime on a daily basis, cannot be overstated.”
Cekeshe, who was arrested during the height of the 2015 student movement #FeesMustFall, has served over two years in jail.
The Economic Freedom Fighters, which has been campaigning for former Wits student to be released, has since welcomed Ramaphosa’s gesture.
It is expected both Cekeshe and Dalindyebo will be released before Christmas.
