Greenwood the hero as United are saved red blushes

Manchester United’s Premier League charge at home was stalled by Everton on Sunday courtesy of a 1-1 draw. But before a loss could be the result, the mercurial teenage revelation Mason Greenwood restored parity for the Red Devils in the 77th minute with victory looking far from certain on the day.

For his display, Greenwood was voted Man of the Match with his equalising strike making for some notable statistics. The 18-year-old slammed a Daniel James pass past Jordan Pickford after an own goal by Victor Lindelöf threatened to hand all three points to the visiting Merseysiders.

Greenwood is the youngest scorer in a Premier League match at Old Trafford since Federico Macheda’s famous winner against Aston Villa in April 2009. It was also his seventh strike this season, making him the second top scorer for the Reds, behind Marcus Rashford, and followed up his brace against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday.

The British sports analytics company, Opta Sports, revealed that the only other teenagers to earn more strikes in all competitions this season – plying a trade in one of the top five European leagues – are Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Arsenal attacker, Gabriel Martinelli.

Delighted and confident

“Mason Greenwood is a different class in and around the box,” manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær told Sky Sports. “You’re not surprised when he scores goals. It’s fitting that it should be an Academy player who scores in the 4 000th match [in a row in which United have fielded a youth-team product] and it makes it hard for me to leave him out.”

‘He is a special talent’

“It was a great finish again,” added captain Harry Maguire. “It was pretty similar to his goal in midweek [against AZ Alkmaar] to be honest. He is a special talent. He is a young boy and is working hard in training. He needs to keep his head down and not get carried away. I am sure he is going to have a big future at this club. We are lucky to have him.”
