A 37-year-old man was handed a harsh sentence by the Scottburgh Regional Court after he reportedly raped six little girls in Sawoti, KwaZulu-Natal in June 2017.
The man who knew all the six children aged between 6 and 11 reportedly lured them while they were walking past his home or playing with their friends.
After raping the girls, he took out his firearm and threatened them. Some were even given R2 or R5 after he raped them.
The man was arrested after some of the children were overheard talking about the incidents. The children were questioned further before they finally spoke about this horrific crime.
The man appeared in court before he was sentenced to six life terms of life imprisonment.
Prosecutor Sibusiso Mhlongo led the testimonies of the victims, the evidence produced by the doctor and first reports.
The suspect was handed another 5-year imprisonment for the possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The KwaZulu-Natal Director of Public Prosecutions, Adv. Elaine Khuzwayo welcomed the sentencing.
“I hope that this sentence assists in addressing the scourge of sexual offences rife in the country. This indicative of our on-going fight against crimes of this nature,” Adv. Khuzwayo said.
