Muvhango on the chopping block?

The SABC is hemorrhaging local shows, and TshiVenda soapie Muvhango is rumoured to be next, after its SABC 3 counterpart was confirmed to bow out in 2020.

Apparently the SABC is contemplating canning SABC 2’s soap flagship because there’s no money to keep it on its pay roll.

According to Muvhango publicist Karabo Disethle Mtshayelo, national broadcaster’s financial situation is the reason staff’s salaries have not yet been paid and the impending shutdown.

“In the absence of a payment guarantee, we have sent correspondence notifying the broadcaster that we will be shutting down at 2pm this afternoon and we will only reopen when we have been paid,” said Karabo.

“Last month when we enquired we were told that the SABC did not have money to pay them; that is why they couldn’t pay salaries,” a source told Sunday World.

“When we asked why the company didn’t apply for an overdraft to pay salaries, we were told that we would be paid double on Friday, November 29.”

Friday came and went and still, nothing. Until this email dropped into employees’ inbox.

“We are in constant communication with various players at [the] SABC responsible for our payment but have not received assurances that payment will be made on time to reflect in everyone’s account first thing tomorrow morning [Saturday 30 November],” according to the email sent to cast and crew members.

Earlier this month, Generations: The Legacy also faced axing, until it was renewed for two more seasons, while Isidingo’s canning was confirmed over the weekend.
