CAF wrap: Sundowns record crushing win, Wits held!

Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits got their CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup campaign underway with Masandawana securing their opening win while Wits were left dejected after a goalless stalemate.

The Brazilians thrashed Angolan outfit Petro de Luanda 3-0 in their opening CAF CL Group C match at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday.

Coach Pitso Mosimane’s charges went into the encounter without the services of lethal goalkeeper Denis Onyango and skipper Hlompho Kekana, however registered an early goal after Mauricio Affonso nodded home six minutes in the game.

The Angolans, who were embarking on their continental debut, felt the pressure more when momentum piled up for Masandawana, with Motjeka Madisha doubling Sundowns’ lead 29 minutes into the game to break the first half with a healthy two-goal lead.

Coming into the second stanza, Mosimane brought in Lyle Lakay who made an immediate impact with a crucial pass that found Sphelele Mkhulise in a good position after Gaston Sirino’s supply, giving the hosts a healthy three-goal win.

Mosimane’s charges are currently topping Group C after collecting maximum points while USM Alger held WAC Casablanca to a draw.

Bidvest Wits 0-0 Horoya AC

Bidvest Wits and Horoya AC settled for a goalless stalemate in their CAF Confederation Cup opener which left the Students heartbroken as they expected to start on a good foot.

The affair was a tight one as both sides struggled to create chances in both halves despite the inclusion of experienced players such as Thulani Hlatshwayo.

The Braamfontein-based club will be looking for a win in their next encounter as Group C encountered a draw between Djoliba and Al-Nars also failed to produce a winner.
