The Democratic Alliance(DA) has welcomed the short-stint arrest of Bongani Bongo.
Parliament’s chairperson of Home Affairs Committee Bongo was arrested by the Hawks on Thursday.
However, he has since been granted bail with his case set for next year.
DA’s Chief Whip Natasha Mazzone says the party is elated with the Hawks’ move against Bongo.
He is but one of many State Capture foot soldiers
“The DA welcomes this action by the Hawks as we have always maintained that Bongo had a case to answer for. He is but one of many State Capture foot soldiers who actively participated in the selling off of our country and we can only hope that his arrest will be the first of many,” Mazzone said.
The former State Security Minister was arrested on allegations of fraud and corruption.
Bongo is charged for bribing then evidence leader during the Parliament’s enquiry into Eskom Ntuthuzelo Vanara.
However, Bongo is reported to be enjoying massive support from top ANC leaders such as Deputy President David Mabuza.
Bongo, who was recently promoted to chair the Parliament’s Committee despite widespread opposition against his appointment, has always been seen as a corrupt figure.
Former President Jacob Zuma appointed him into the executive as Minister of State Security and Home Affairs.
It is expected that opposition parties such as the DA and EFF will write to the Speaker of National Assembly Thandi Modise to ask Bongo to step down from his position.
