Messi’s friend and teammate at Barcelona, Luis Suarez, had given Uruguay a second-half lead from a free-kick before Martin Caceres handled in the area. This allowed the Argentinian maestro to step up and duly pocket his second international goal in as many matches after earning a solitary strike in his side’s 1-0 victory over other South American rivals, Brazil, days earlier.

Edinson Cavani opened the scoring for Uruguay but Manchester City forward Sergio Agüero levelled for Argentina. Messi played a hand in both of his side’s goals in the Israeli city, first, nudging a delicate free-kick which was met by a glancing header from Agüero, and then he salvaged a draw from the spot with defeat looming after Argentina goalkeeper, Esteban Andrada, palmed Suarez’s set-piece into the top corner.

Messi, who is expected to lift his sixth Ballon d’Or award in Paris on December 2, will next line up for the Blaugrana in a La Liga assignment to Leganes on Saturday. Barcelona currently sits at the top of the table with 25 points from 12 games with eight wins.
