Google gives Cape Town Free WiFi

Education and access to technology have proven beyond recognition that South African communities are disadvantaged compared to more inclined third-world countries. Google South Africa, partnering with Think WiFi an internet service provider, have provided the Cape Flats community as well as other communities in Cape Town with free WiFi.

Speaking at the first Google for South Africa event in Johannesburg, Google Africa director Nitin Gajria said the company will be providing free, fast and open-access internet in the form of WiFi to communities through the Google Station programme.

“Think WiFi are passionate about providing fast, free, reliable, uncapped WiFi in underserved communities- giving people access to more on-line resources and more opportunities,” Gajria said.

Speaking on access to technology and education, Gajiria said: “By gaining access to information via the internet, we hope that people in these communities will get a more equal opportunity to learn and develop and live more empowered lives.”

According to the press statement, the programme is launched throughout 125 locations across Cape Town to underserved communities like Langa, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Delft, Elsies River, Philippi and more.

In addition, Google has invested more than $1 million (around R14 800 000) to supporting and upskilling girls and women in South Africa as part of a five-year initiative. This investment will also benefit the development of social enterprises, non-profits and the growth of the community’s economy.
