According to Volkswagen, the Golf sales will start in December for the German market and other markets including SA will follow in 2020.

On the outside, it possesses a sporty and funky look with the front end gaining a new grille that incorporates lighting signature line that extends into the new VW logo.

The new Volkswagen Golf 8 joins the market with five hybrid powertrains; three of them use 48-volt mild-hybrid systems, and they produce 81 kW, 96 kW, and 110 kW. There are also two plug-in hybrids with 13-kilowatt-hour batteries that offer 150 kW and 180 kW.

There are also two tunes of a 1.0-litre turbo three-cylinder petrol engine making 66 kW and 81 kW and two versions of a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder offering 85 kW and 110 kW.

There are only two 2.0-litre diesel engines in different states of tune, 85 kW and 110 kW.

The most powerful engine delivers 220 kW. And depending on the model, a six-speed manual will be standard and a dual-clutch transmission available.

Inside, there is a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 8.25-inch infotainment screen are fitted as standard and the vehicle is always connected to the outside world, either via the Internet or a new Car-to-Infrastructure (C2X) communications system.

For the South African Market, the 8 will be offered in three engine derivatives, 1.4-litre TSI, 2.0-litre GTI and 2.0-litre R. All three engines will come with DSG transmissions, sadly, no manuals.
