DA’s ‘black caucus’ not singing from the same hymn sheet

The prospect of a wholesale exodus by black leaders of the Democratic Alliance (DA) seems unlikely following the decision by party leader, Mmusi Maimane, to quit his position for what he said was the party’s failure to embrace diversity.

Some black leaders of the DA have expressed their disapproval of Maimane and Federal Chairperson Athol Trollip’s decision’s to step down, days after Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba led the pack.

Gwen Ngwenya, a former DA Policy Head who quit her post earlier this year while choosing to retain her membership has tweeted that her view is that many black leaders will not follow Maimane.

DA Member of Parliament, Phumzile Van Damme also indicated that she will also remain a member and leader of the party.

Makashule Gana, DA Member of the Legislature in Gauteng has also come out to quash suggestions that he may also be on his way out.

“Let me respond to the question of whether am resigning from the DA. I am NOT resigning, the thought has not visited. I am running my own race which I started on my own. Tempting as it might be to follow others, I still prefer to run my own race.”

Gana and Van Damme have also dismissed an invitation to a press conference that will be addressed by them alongside Gauteng MPL, Solly Msimanga, at the DA headquarters next week Monday as false news.
