#Elections2019: Ramaphosa weighs in Mozambique elections

It’s just hours before Mozambique’s preliminary results from various polling stations in the country are released and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has wished the country “the best”.

This comes after Mozambique’s general elections of which more than 12 million voters registered to participate in the elections. The Mozambique National Electoral Commission is expected to announce the preliminary results within 72 hours after the closing of polling stations.

Speaking in Pretoria, Ramaphosa said he wishes the best for the country and hopes relations of the two countries wouldn’t change after this elections.

“As South Africans we wish the people of Mozambique the best as they hold a peaceful election and this to us deepens democracy, we look forward to carrying on with our wonderful relations with Mozambique and its people.”

This elections has been one of the most intense as they are expected to test the peace deal signed between the ruling party and former opposition rebels in the southern African country.

The Frelimo party, which has ruled the country since independence from Portugal in 1975, was expected to maintain control against its rival Renamo.

The two sides signed a deal in August to end decades of civil war that left a millions dead.
