It was another match that saw head coach Ernst Middendorp ringing changes to his injury-ravaged squad.

Itumeleng Khune made way for Daniel Akpeyi in goals while there was a debut start for Njabulo Blom at right-back in Reeve Frosler’s place, with captain on the night Willard Katsande replacing George Maluleka in the middle of the park.

The Glamour Boys started off on a high which saw them take a 25th minute lead after Khama Billiat’s goal-bound shot struck Siyabonga Dube’s hand inside the 18-yard area.

Daniel Cardoso coolly converted from the spot kick, sending Edmore Sibanda the wrong way for his second goal of the new campaign.

In the 29th minute, Steve Komphela’s troops almost drew level when Sibusiso Sibeko found himself in a one-on-one situation, but his effort was thwarted off by Yagan Sasman.

As the first period drew close, Abafana Bes’thende thought they had gone level but to their dismay saw in-form Kearyn Baccus rescue Chiefs with a goal-line clearance.

The second-half started on a bad note for Chiefs who lost Sasman through injury, as Siyabonga Ngezana took his place.

Chiefs got their second goal of the match in the 60th minute after Nkosinathi Sibisi turned the ball into his own net with Billiat’s header having initially struck the upright.

Komphela’s men were handed half a chance to pull one back when Akpeyi failed to hold onto a long-range shot. The ball fell kindly into Knox Mutizwa’s path but the Zimbabwean marksman blasted his effort over the bar.

Chiefs lived dangerously in the last few minutes of the match but stood resolute at the back to register three wins on the trot.
