Mbeki correct to avoid ‘poisoned’ water: Tweeps

Users of microblogging website Twitter believe former President Thabo Mbeki’s protection team was right to prevent him from drinking water that may be ‘poisoned’ during the lecture he delivered yesterday in honor of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.

Mbeki’s bodyguards were seen swapping bottled water placed on his table for water that they brought along with them soon after he took his position beside KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala during a rousing welcome for his first public address in Kwa-Zulu Natal in more than 13 years.

Mbeki was booed by his detractors the last time he spoke in the province in 2006 at a time when his lengthy political contest with Jacob Zuma was well underway.

A number of twitter users have decided to draw parallels between the recent poising of then Acting-Mayor of Ethekwini Fawzia Peer who was rushed to hospital in July after she drank a bottle of water in her office. They say that the incident justifies their view that the water should not be trusted by the former president.

During his speech on Mugabe’s legacy, Mbeki hailed Mugabe who was a former ANC youth league member in his days as a student at Fort Hare University as an important figure for the liberation of South Africa itself.

“One of the people that we should always value as one of the combatants for the liberation of South Africa was President Mugabe.”
