The decision to have the players released was due to the withdrawal of Madagascar from the international friendly match that was scheduled for Saturday at Orlando Stadium.

During a media brief on Thursday evening, SAFA announced that following their meeting with the national team’s technical team and players, they have concluded to release them.

“We want to reiterate that as Safa we totally condemn these acts of violence in respect of the xenophobic attacks on fellow Africans as well as the criminal looting of businesses,” said Danny Jordaan at the briefing as quoted by TimesLIVE.

“Safa has consistently and strong condemned the xenophobic attacks and the wanton attacks of foreign nationals. We reiterate our call that these criminals must be arrested and dealt with harshly.

“We call on all footballers and sportspersons to join hands and unequivocally condemn any violation of the rights of fellow Africans in our country as well as xenophobic attacks.”

Bafana suffered a second setback after their initial friendly against Zambia was cancelled just when the South Africans were finalizing their traveling arrangements to fly to Lusaka for the match.

This is rather a very stressful and chaotic moment for the newly appointed head coach Molefi Ntseki whose first match got cancelled twice putting the team in very pressuring back-to-back games against Ghana and Sudan.

However, the acting CEO of SAFA Russell Paul has assured that they are working tirelessly to secure opponents for the next Fifa sanctioned internationally friendly window from October 7-15 just before the AFCON qualifiers.

“In October we have two opportunities to play two friendly matches. It is still some way but already we are speaking with some countries and we are trying to finalise,” said Paul.

“Hopefully over the next couple of days we will be able to release those fixtures.”
