The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are yet to announce how they will vote in the upcoming motion of no confidence against Johannesburg Executive mayor Herman Mashaba tomorrow.
The EFF is without a doubt the kingmaker in this motion, as its vote against or absenteeism has dire consequences for Mashaba.
The Red Berets have previously stated that they will no longer vote with the Democratic Alliance (DA) in all council voting.
This comes after the DA refused to hand them power in the City of Tshwane municipality.
However, the EFF and Mashaba have a good working relationship in the city of Johannesburg, with Mashaba implementing most of EFF’s demands such as insourcing of securities.
However, with the EFF’s relationship with Mashaba’s DA sour, voting for Mashaba means that the Red Berets allow the DA to continue with its rule in the city, while their absenteeism can see the African National Congress (ANC) hijack power in the city.
It must be noted it was the ANC which filed this motion of no confidence.
It is hoping the EFF sticks to their word of not voting DA in order to pounce on the opportunity to gain power in Joburg once again.
The EFF has branded itself as a party for the marginalized, disenfranchised and poor black masses.
This motion of no confidence provides them with an opportunity to walk the talk and put the interest of their constituency first.
It is without a doubt that the fight between the ANC and DA is all about personal power and people’s interests do not feature in their agenda.
The EFF should not be allowed to be used by these two organizations in their bid to have power, but should ensure that whatever decision they make will work in the best interest of the people.
The Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan municipality is led by a compromised candidate from a smaller party and maybe the City of Johannesburg should be led by such a candidate instead of these power-hungry politicians from the two major parties.
The ball is in the EFF’s court to make the right decision for the residents of Johannesburg.
