Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Katlego Mphela has issued a positive warning to the club’s newly-signed strikers Lazarous Kambole and Samir Nurkovic.
‘Killer’, who enjoyed two fruitful seasons with the Glamour Boys, winning league and cup honours between 2013 and 2015, has offered some stern advice to the duo.
Speaking to SoccerLaduma, the former RC Strasbourg goal-poacher spoke of the difference between playing for the Glamour Boys and Mamelodi Sundowns.
“I have played for the national team and [Mamelodi] Sundowns, but to play for Chiefs is something else,” said Mphela.
“There is so much pressure. More than Bafana Bafana because you go for duty once in a while, so sometimes you can get away with it. When you are at Chiefs that is when you realize how big they are. At some clubs you can do it this week and it’s okay to not repeat it the following week, but at Chiefs you have to always do the job.”
Kambole and Nurkovic, who arrived at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, made their official club debuts in the pre-season Soweto Derby Carling Black Label defeat to Orlando Pirates, are yet to register their names on the scoresheet for the club though their efforts to aid the team claim back-to-back wins has not gone unnoticed.
“With the previous strikers that played at Chiefs it makes it even more difficult because you have to follow Collins Mbesuma, Knowledge Musona and Fani Madida. I feel for the new strikers really. But with the support they have they will deliver – it is one big family there. As long as they (teammates) create chances for them. For Chiefs to sign them means they have seen them scoring goals.”
Chiefs will go into their next league fixture with hopes of maintaining their winning momentum.
They will face SuperSport United on Saturday, August 24, at FNB Stadium, with the game starting at 18:00.
