The two most successful English clubs of the past two decades meet on the opening weekend for the first time in 15 years, which promises to be a mouthwatering clash between the red and blue sides led by former players in respective dugouts.

The Reds drew 1-1 with the Blues in the penultimate home game last season, after Juan Mata’s goal was cancelled out late in the first period by Marcos Alonso.

United failed to win any of their home games against the other ‘big six’ clubs in the Premier League last season, a record Ole Gunnar Solksjaer will look to rectify by fielding his strongest possible side as they go all out for maximum points.

Despite lack of marquee signings during the summer transfer window period, Solksjaer is eager to lead his charges to their first maximum points of the new term after avoiding defeat in all their six pre-season matches.

Summer signings Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James are all expected to make their full competitive debuts for the Reds, while Paul Pogba is also expected to make a return to the starting XI after missing out the team’s last pre-season outing against AC Milan.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have club legend Frank Lampard in the hot seat for his first game in charge of the club he enjoyed so much success at before retiring in 2014.

The 41-year-old midfielder faces a selection headache with some of his key players running against time to be fit for their highly-anticipated clash. Antonio Rudiger, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James are all set to miss out for the visitors with various injuries, while there are also doubts surrounding the fitness of N’Golo Kante and Willian.

The clash will commence at 16:00.
