He was honest in his assessment following a performance that is believed to have been made worse by the bonus row that hit their camp on the eve of the Africa Cup of Nations here in Egypt.

But the coach did not allude to it at all when he faced the media immediately after the embarrassing defeat.

“We did not play well in all the departments,” Chidzambwa said in his post-match press conference.

“But during the warm-up our first choice goalkeeper got injured but these are not excuses at all. We played badly. We conceded easy goals and it was a bad performance on our part. We need to go home and rewind our performances and find a way forward,” added Chidzambwa.

Zimbabwe beat the DR Congo twice during the AFCON qualifiers and the coach was asked whether his men had become complacent.

“If you look at our game, we were very slow. So there was that element and we were chasing the game and couldn’t come back. I take the blame and maybe in the near future we need to a different approach. The players we picked must deliver, so we take the blame,” Chidzambwa concluded.

Hosts Egypt and Uganda have progressed to the last 16 from Group A, while the DRC have to wait to find out if they proceed as one of the third-based ranking in the tournament.
