Assange’s lawyer: “He is too ill”

Julius Assange is too ill to appear from a British prison via a video link in a hearing on an extradition request from the United States, said his lawyer on Thursday.

The United States has requested the extradition of the WikiLeaks founder who faces 18 US criminal counts and could serve decades in prison if convicted.

This comes after was dragged from the Ecuadorean embassy in London on 11 April.

“He’s in fact far from well,” Gareth Peirce, his lawyer.

Judge Emma Arbuthnot added: “He’s not very well.”

WikiLeaks, which expressed it had significant concerns about Assange’s health said he had been moved to a health ward at Britain’s Belmarsh prison.

WikiLeaks adds that his health has lost a lot of weight amid the deterioration of his health in prison.

The extradition request’s new hearing has been set for June 12.
