Armed group loots and kidnaps 10 civilians in eastern DRC

An armed group in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have kidnapped ten people said local sources on Thursday.

The assailant’s raid in Chianichani village, they burned and looted a local health centre and also robbed houses, according to reports.

“Ten people were swept away by these attackers,” administrative director of Beni, Donat Kibwana, told AFP.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in Chianchiani and another village, Kumbwa in Kamango, saying they clashed with the Congolese military, according to the SITE Intelligence group.

Beni is one one of the main cities affected by DRC tenth outbreak of Ebola in 40 years – which has killed more than 1,000 people since August.

However, AFP could not verify this.

No attacks have been reported by the Congolese army on its bases in Kamango.

For the first time, the Islamic State group claimed last month that it was behind an attack on a Congolese army position in North Kivu province.

DRC Authorities, have regularly accused the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) — forced out of Uganda in the mid-1990s – of attacking army positions in North Kivu.

The Islamist-rooted ADF has been blamed a 2014 massacre in the North Kivu region of Beni which claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians.
