Transfer: United fans fear the worst

Manchester United supporters feared the worst when news emerged that transfer target Matthijs de Ligt had been spotted in Barcelona.

The Ajax captain is one of the most highly sought-after players in the world right now, with a host of clubs looking at him. The 19-year-old guided his team to a Champions League semi-final, as well as a domestic double of an Eredivisie and KNVB Cup.

The center-back has captured the eyes of the footballing world thanks to his leadership ability at such a young age, and is reportedly wanted by United, Liverpool and Barcelona.

The Catalan club are considered to be the front-runners for the Dutchman, having already secured the services of his friend and team-mate Frankie de Jong.

Barca forked out R1.1 billion (£65.8m) for the services of the 22-year-old, who has emerged as one of the best young players in the world. And after De Ligt was spotted in Barcelona on Friday evening, it was feared by many Manchester United fans that they had been beaten to the punch.

However, all is not as it seems, as it was revealed that the entire Ajax squad is in Barcelona to celebrate their successful season. Despite not having the lure of Champions League football next season, De Ligt is still interested in a move to United.

The report suggests that De Ligt is aware of the situation at the club, and is intrigued by the idea of being the ‘poster boy’ at Old Trafford.

United are reportedly keen on bringing in De Ligt as a major piece of their summer rebuild, and he could be the centerpiece of their new team. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is plotting a mass exodus and is apparently intent on signing young talent rather than experienced players.
