Thulani Caleb Serero is a South African footballer who plays as a midfielder for Vitesse and the South African national team.
Prior to joining Vitesse, he played for Ajax and for Ajax Cape Town in the South African Premier Soccer League.
Serero has played for the South Africa U-20 team. He earned his first cap for South Africa on 9 February 2011. He came on as a second-half substitute in a friendly against Kenya. He scored his first Bafana Bafana goal against Swaziland in a non-friendly match ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Serero has earned individual praise for his performances in Holland this season, with the Eredivisie themselves handing him plaudits for his efforts.
Serero played 31 league games for Vitesse Arnhem this season as he made the defensive midfield position his own under Leonid Slutsky, playing a vital role as they went on to finish fifth and qualify for the domestic UEFA Europa League play-offs.
Now, prior to facing Groningen in that first play-off encounter, the league have named a 20-man Team of the Season based on stats from OPTA, with the former Ajax Cape Town midfielder making it onto the bench among the best players in the league.
The news is just the latest Bafana boost in what has been a solid year for South African footballers abroad, with the likes of Percy Tau, Lebo Mothiba and Lars Veldwijk all either winning or being nominated for awards in recent weeks.
